Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Lunsford, Founder of Lunsford Behavioral Consulting & Yoga, LLC., located in Fredericksburg, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Lunsford Behavioral Consulting & Yoga, LLC. I mainly serve individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, and intellectual disabilities in addressing challenging behaviors. Still, I work with neurotypical individuals who may also need help with things like habit changes or overcoming phobias.

I help with health-related behaviors as well, such as weight loss. I’m one of the few BCBAs in the world that integrates meditation and mindfulness into my treatment approaches if clinically indicated.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Matthew Lunsford, and I’m a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, licensed behavior analyst in Virginia, a 500-hour Registered Yoga, Teacher, Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher, yoga therapist, and Certified Health Specialist.

I’m working towards my MSW at the University of Kentucky to earn my DSW and LCSW credentials. I had wanted to go into private practice for a long time and finally took the plunge after seeing what it was like to work for someone else.

I’m also legally blind, so I experienced a great deal of discrimination in the workplace and decided that I’d be better off running my own company. Some days are more complex than others, but I enjoy seeing my patients’ successes, no matter how small those may be.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my most significant accomplishments so far was getting my business off the ground due to what’s involved in running a private practice. The next milestone for me will be offering CEUs for BCBAs and BCaBAs.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Initially, one of the most challenging things was the financial side, but that has gotten much easier and isn’t a concern for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t be afraid to try new ideas. You never know what will be successful until you try.
  2. Have other professionals help you and stick to what your expertise is.
  3. Partner with others inside and outside of your field. You never know what doors may open later on.
