E-Commerce SEO Services & Consulting - Matt Jackson

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matt Jackson, SEO Strategist and E-commerce SEO Consultant, located in Sheffield, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate an e-commerce SEO service business, which involves improving and promoting websites to increase their ranking positions in Google search for keywords relevant to their products, with the goal of increasing sales. My customers are business owners and marketing managers of companies wishing to grow their online retail channels through SEO, mainly websites hosted on Shopify, BigCommerce, Opencart, Magento, and Woocommerce.

Tell us about yourself

I started off in-house, creating and optimising an e-commerce website. This went really well, and I then went external to help companies all around the world do the same thing. The main motivation I have with SEO is its complexity, as well as the fact it constantly changes with regular Google algorithm updates. These really keep you on your toes and add a barrier to entry for others trying to offer the service.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be the success I achieve for my clients with smaller budgets, as it always feels like we've performed above and beyond expectations.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing in the SEO business is dealing with algorithm updates, as you often have little idea of what has changed and why. There is often a lag time between the cause and effect with SEO, which can create false correlations that cause you to make bad decisions. The key here is to have a lot of sites, so you can understand the overall impact of changes and algorithm updates.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The main thing I would advise is to be patient and save a war chest. To start a business, you will fail far more than you win, so you need to know that ahead of time to stop you from getting deflated. Keep improving your business and focus on your USPs vs. competitors.
