Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carmen Acton, Founder of Masterful Collaboration, located in San Rafael, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Are you feeling stuck? Are you questioning yourself or unclear on what you want to do next or how to do it? As the founder and principal coach at Masterful Collaboration, I work with high-performing individuals and teams to catapult themselves to higher levels of performance, satisfaction, and wellbeing through experiential exercises and transformational coaching. It's time to stretch into your potential.

Tell us about yourself

I worked in corporate roles for over 20 years and, in that time, discovered my passion for human development. I moved from hazardous material/hazardous waste management to leadership and employee development. I discovered my greatest passion - partnering with emerging leaders (no matter their tenure) and helping them shift their mindsets, overcome limiting beliefs, and discover the impact or passion that drives them. I also discovered the freedom and joy doing this work in my own way brings.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been in getting clear on the value I bring and the clients I most enjoy working with and focusing my attention there. The rest has largely taken care of itself.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Achieving balance. It's important to identify your goals/aspirations, get clear on your "sweet spot," and bring in additional resources where needed so you don't burn out. This is particularly true if you want to grow your business or develop meaningful partnerships.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have developed a clear vision for what you want to achieve and that you have the resources to support you as you ramp up.
  2. Don't expect everything to fall into place right away-get a mentor or coach.
  3. Have a plan for your own continued development - there is a lot of complexity and change all around us. It's important to stay abreast of what's going on in your field....or become the visionary extraordinaire.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There is a saying that we over-estimate what we can accomplish in a year and under-estimate what we can accomplish in ten years. Take that to heart...get clear on your "musts," and let go of "shoulds" that don't serve you.
