Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Victoria Brown, Co-Founder of MashUp Contemporary Dance Company, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MashUp Contemporary Dance Company is an all-female dance company dedicated to the movement of female bodies and feminist ideas. Prioritizing innovation, collaboration, and inclusion, MashUp uplifts female-identifying artists and builds community through contemporary dance.

Tell us about yourself

In 2010, Sarah Rodenhouse and I started MashUp Contemporary Dance Company because we felt there weren't enough performance opportunities for female contemporary dancers in LA. Continuing to provide more opportunities to dancers and choreographers is what motivates me to do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being nominated by The World Choreography Awards for the film Boundless commissioned by MashUp Contemporary Dance Company in celebration of National Women's Equality Day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust the process.
  2. Surround yourself with supportive people.
  3. Don't be afraid to delegate or ask for help.
