What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a copywriting coach for coaches, consultants, and small business owners (who know what they want to say but get stuck in the writing and editing process).

Tell us about yourself

I really landed here by accident. After years of being a copywriter, I tried to give it up for something that felt more meaningful and relevant at the time. I went through a health coach training program and began helping people find their own path to healing through diet and lifestyle changes. But I hated it. I loved the helping part. I wasn't so much into the business part, and the work wasn't inspiring me. It didn't feel sustainable to me. At the same time, I noticed other coaches struggling with their marketing. Mainly, they struggled to write the copy they needed in order to sell their services. I combined my coaching and my writing background, and... boom! A copywriting coach was born.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So many! Working for yourself is challenging, scary, and empowering. I think the biggest accomplishment was when I realized I'd matched the salary I'd made as an employee ON MY OWN. In my own time, on my own schedule. Then realizing I didn't have to ask anyone for a raise. I just had to keep growing and finding ways to serve. That felt like a massive accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing that comes with working on your own is learning to set boundaries. Boundaries with clients, with yourself, with your time, with the work you're doing. In my case, I was so used to being told what to do, where to be, and when to be... it's a shift to be alone and have just one person making the call. You have to figure out a system that works for you and the journey to figuring out what works for you. That's the challenge. But it's also the reward.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Manage your mindset. Mindset touches just about any part of running a business. You've got to manage your mind to be open to failure, be open to the unexpected, be open to feeling like you have no idea what you're doing (and be okay with that). If your mindset isn't checked, you can truly spin yourself right out of business.
  2. Ask for help when you need it, but don't forget to ask the mirror. Never forget that YOU will know what's best for you. You are the guru you're searching for. Try to avoid the shiny object syndrome. Trust your gut; believe your intuition. And what's that saying? Don't compare your start to someone else's outcome—something like that. There are so many paths to success. Yours might not look like anyone else's. That doesn't mean it's wrong.
  3. Understand the money side of your business. Got money issues or trauma? Look at them and find a way to heal them.
