Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marlana Semenza, a photographer and visual strategist based in Raleigh, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the reputation business. I provide stand-out photography and visual strategy for personal brands on the rise.

Tell us about yourself

I was a photography major in college and am fortunate to have had a very diverse work background that includes everything from portraits and weddings to pro wrestling and advertising. (Yes, it's been a ride!) I began to realize that every time I picked up the camera, I was looking for the story...the thing that made this situation, this person, different and special. I read a quote, and unfortunately, I don't know the source, but it said something to the effect of 'the world will ask you who you are. And if you do not know, the world will tell you.' To my clients, that is a problem. Not only do they want to step into the spotlight, but they also want to steer their own reputation. They do not sit idly by while others tell them who they are or should be. They want to sit squarely in that driver's seat and be the ones to tell you who they are. The part I play is in helping with that communication. Together, we fight anonymity and grow their personal brand.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Easily the people that have entrusted me with their stories, who have welcomed me into their lives and knew that I 'had them.' Not only did they know that I would make them look great, but they also knew that I do not tell tales that are not mine to tell.

As an example, one gentleman who was a pro athlete was extremely private and guarded. He did not allow many into his circle in that way. He died a few years back, and even though I have permission from his wife, I still cannot allow myself to share what I consider to be his personal images. She, of course, can. But, I just can't. I take the trust that is granted to me very seriously.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Living up to what you know you're capable of. It's as simple and as complicated as that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Decide the business you are really in. As I said, I am in the reputation business. Photography is simply the tool I use.
  2. Decide who you serve. This one is tough for many starting out because they are afraid to niche down, thinking they are leaving money on the table. I promise you, you are not. You cannot be all things to all types of people. Be the go-to solution for one.
  3. Don't forget that your business and your brand are fluid. Keep learning. Keep growing. No matter what stage of your business you are in, there is always something to learn if you are open to it. So, surround yourself with people that will continue to lift you higher.
