What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide fractional CMO services to B2B SaaS companies. My services include positioning, messaging, strategic planning, and tactical oversight. I strive to make my clients the obvious choice for customers.

Tell us about yourself

I spent 15 years as a newspaper journalist before co-founding a startup during the original dot-com boom (2000). I started my marketing consultancy in 2008. I'm a die-hard entrepreneur who gets excited about helping other entrepreneurs succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Operating a successful business for the past 15 years has been a major win. It has provided me with work/life balance, flexibility, and the ability to be the master of my own domain. I could never be working for anyone else!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

That's easy. Attracting new business. For any business owner, there's anxiety about when the next customer will appear. You have to recognize that business has its up and downs, and you can be in control of everything.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create a brand that makes a solid first impression: a well-designed website, professionally taken photographs, and a good LinkedIn profile.
  2. Constantly work on growing your network. Business and opportunities happen when you make connections with people.
  3. Focus on making your clients successful and act before they ask. Go the extra mile to serve their needs. It'll go a long way to drive successful engagements and drive referrals.
