What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Marketing On Purpose, I help small business owners to build brand strategies and marketing plans to help them take their businesses to the next level of growth and impact.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business because I was disheartened when I figured out that one of my dear friends and tech business owner had spent a lot of money on marketing execution without having the foundation down. He didn't have a brand strategy or a strong understanding of his ideal customers, yet he'd built a website and marketing materials. He called me in to help, and I realized that so many small business owners were in the same boat. They don't really know what to look for from their marketing partners or how to brief them properly. So I wanted to help them out by working directly with business owners to build the foundation for their marketing that they could then use to outsource or DIY. Having this strategic foundation makes a world of difference in the effectiveness of one's marketing. What keeps me going is that I know that the business owners I work with want to do more than thrive; they want to make an impact. Each time I work with a client on their brand and help them figure out their brand purpose (the good they will do beyond profit), I am helping to make this world better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I started, I wanted to create a system to help small business owners be more strategic and create brands. My biggest accomplishment is the development of the Brand-Worth-Loving system, which I've used with over one hundred small business owners to help them build the strategic foundation for their marketing. I've recently completed the first draft of my very first book where I reveal the whole method so more small businesses can use what I've learned to help them reach their goals. The creation of the Brand-Worth-Loving Method and being almost ready to have my book published is the biggest accomplishment thus far.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

At first, it's probably wearing too many hats and uncertainty. Later, I think it's about giving some of those hats to others to wear so you can focus your energy on higher-priority items to drive your business forward. Most business owners like to be in control, and it's hard to let go. But, it's often necessary for exponential growth. You can't do it all alone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on why you are doing this. Passion can fade when things get tough, but if you believe that what you are doing will make a significant and positive impact that you care about, it's pretty hard to quit.
  2. Be decisive and flexible at the same time. I know it's an oxymoron, but as business owners, we need to be clear on what we are trying to accomplish but flexible in our approach to get there.
  3. Consider Marketing a significant part of your job. At the onset, business owners must be highly involved in their marketing to set the strategic foundation and ensure it works before outsourcing it. You may not want to be a marketer, but given that marketing generally equals business growth, it's important that you understand it and get involved.
