Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marina Haynes, Founder of Marina Haynes Artistry + Esthetics, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a makeup artist and Esthetician specializing in bridal styling, editorial, and commercial makeup. In my studio, I offer lux facials, waxing, and spray tans.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been obsessed with beauty since I was a little girl. I’d spend my time practicing makeup and hairstyling in my room for hours. Makeup, skincare, and styling have motivated me to get out of bed for years. It is what I dream about, and I love marking people feel uniquely beautiful.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I’m actually out here doing it. Most of my clients are referrals, and I pride myself on my excellent work ethic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Definitely the back-end work as a makeup artist. There are TONS of thought and action that goes into keeping organized and clean kits, cleaning brushes and sponges, as well as making sure you are constantly stocked with everything you need. Most days, I’m in a new place, so traveling with everything can be demanding. Not to mention the email load weddings can bring.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Network.
  2. Practice what you love. Do it ALL the time.
  3. Share and show people your work.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When I do what I do, I’m completely in my element. There isn’t anything else I’d rather be doing. I’m so thankful (even on the hard days) that I pushed through everyone telling me I wouldn’t be successful as an MUA. I moved from LA to Oregon with a weight of people telling me o wouldn’t be as successful. They were wrong. Oregon is a community where people come together and support each other. If there is something you just can’t imagine not doing—then go full speed ahead with what you want. It will work out for you.
