Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Margy Goodman, Founder of Margy Rose Yoga, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is all about empowering others! Under the umbrella of Margy Rose Yoga, I offer private yoga and empowerment coaching for women. While my offerings don't typically happen in tandem, both support people in getting bold, challenging themselves, building confidence, and working through perceived limitations, all to tap into their most powerful selves to create the life they desire. My methodology focuses on cultivating mindfulness and self-awareness, which supports my clients in breaking free from limiting beliefs and patterns that keep them stuck, small and unfulfilled.

As a recovering people pleaser who was scared to set boundaries, I especially love working with women who struggle with low self-worth and who are afraid to advocate for their needs. It feels so good to speak up and go after what you want, especially when you learn to do it from a feminine place and with compassion. If you struggle with boundaries, just know that setting them serves everyone involved, truly!

Tell us about yourself

Initially, my business focused on offering private yoga classes. I've been practicing for 13 years, and it has been the most empowering healing modality for me. Yoga and the mindfulness that comes along with it truly transform people, in body and mind. Since I'm so passionate about it, I wanted to support others in healing, growing, and building confidence with this powerful practice.

When I take a step back and look at why yoga is so transformative, what I come up with is that it offers an opportunity to empower ourselves and level up, and not just on the mat. I didn't like yoga at all when I first tried it! Yet here I am. So I wanted to get even more dialed in and focused on the empowering aspects of yoga, which is why I made a slight shift into offering empowerment coaching as well. In my coaching, I help women stop playing small, recognize their worth, and embody confidence by prioritizing their needs, finding their voice, overcoming fears, and asserting compassion-based boundaries to experience a more empowered, fulfilling exuberant life.

This work lights me up because I've been on the other side–disempowered, people pleasing, playing small, insecure, and resentful. It is SO important to me to help women get out of the pattern of staying quiet, over-sacrificing, and self-abandoning out of fear (especially because whatever the fear is, it rarely comes to be). I specifically focus on helping women prioritize their needs and set boundaries. I find that these two pieces also benefit those on the receiving end.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

On a macro level, my biggest accomplishment as a yoga teacher is scaling my business to offer more than "just" yoga and be in greater service. Specifically, I'm most excited about the women's empowerment group I started in July 2021 and the subsequent programs and courses that were born from that. I started the group with a desire to bring women together in the community, with the intention and an emphasis on personal development. As of this publishing, our group has nearly 700 members and meets twice a month "in a circle," where we come together to connect, support one another and grow. I'm blown away by the feedback about how helpful and transformative this group has been for so many women. And the level of support for this group really speaks to how much we're in need of these kinds of mindful communities right now. If you identify as a woman and are interested in joining the circle or program, we'd love to have you! The link to the Facebook group for details is listed in this article, or feel free to reach out to me directly.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it's prioritizing, focusing on what's most important at any given time, and finding balance. I have dozens of ideas with more flooding each day, so prioritizing and staying focused can be hard with so many exciting projects always popping up.

And finding balance! As a solopreneur, if I don't get the work done, it doesn't get done, so I sometimes have to remind myself to take time off and chill out. It's hard when I love what I do, though!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go for it! If you have something you're passionate about, I encourage you to pursue it. Be bold! You can start small; just start.
  2. Seek help. It can be overwhelming and daunting to start a business, so reach out! Network, collaborate, look to others who are doing what you want to be doing, read and listen to podcasts (either about business or by people who are successful in your sector).
  3. Stick with it and be patient. There will be ups and downs, and you might compare yourself to the success of others or to where you want to be, but be patient! Success takes commitment, constant learning, the right action, and time. Remember, most of the people you look up to didn't make it overnight!
