Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Marchese, Founder of MARGO, located in Playa Vista, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Margo is a luxury dog sling brand. Our slings are made of a pre-washed canvas that comes in three neutral colors to match any wardrobe. We created Margo for the chic pet parent in dog-friendly cities that like to bring their pet along for more of their daily day-to-day life.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in fashion and art. When creating Margo, I was able to use my knowledge to design and curate my product. I started by trying all the slings available when I first got my pup, Margo. A lot of what was available was in crazy prints, bad fabric, thin straps, and just not cute to wear with my wardrobe. I am motivated when I am at Artisan Markets and can see the difference our slings make when a pet parent tries it on and how happy both pup and customer are!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We launched during the fall of 2020. As a business owner, that was a difficult time, but we were able to get our brand out to some influencers in social media wanting to help small businesses, and it really helped us bring awareness to Margo! Also, I would like to add that becoming "patent pending" for our elastic pocket is a huge accomplishment!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is learning all the logistics. Learning to be patient and teach myself how to build a website, bookkeeping, shipping, and quality control. Definitely, understanding the bones of a business behind the scenes has been the most difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you're passionate about the business you're about to start. Your passion will help you get through those tough days.
  2. Surround yourself with support. Supportive family/friends really helped me believe in my brand. If you're doing markets, it's also so great to see family/friends stop by to just know they're rooting for you!
  3. Celebrate milestones! I celebrated every little win along the way. It truly is a rewarding feeling!
