Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cynthia Martinez, Owner of Maravillas ATX, located in Kyle, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Maravillas ATX procures the most unique handmade items we could find from Mexican artists and small business owners. Our items support entrepreneurs from different states in Mexico and provide exposure to their art. Our items provide all types of customers from different backgrounds the opportunity to own a piece of Mexican culture and beauty not found in our area.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up, we were fortunate to have a mother who emphasized the importance of keeping our Mexican culture and traditions. My grandmother provided for her family in Mexico by making tortillas using a small fire pit that she made in the ground. We grew up hearing the stories of her struggles and her success. This inspired me to do the same, using my love for culture as my foundation.

Our home was humble, but it always contained brightly colored art and ceramics from Mexico. These items brought me such joy, and I often stared at them in awe of their beauty. Being able to bring such items to others and including my daughters in the process has been one of the most enjoyable parts of owning my small business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a small business owner, it is hard to know if you are reaching your targeted audience. I often wonder if my items are just as appealing to my customers as they are to me. One of my first vendor events was not as busy as I would have liked. I had a family come into my space to visit me, and the first thing that came out of a little girl's mouth was, " Mommy, it looks like Encanto in here!" That was one of the best compliments that I could get. Seeing the small girl's face light up let me know that I was accomplishing the reaction that I wanted with my store and products.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I currently work a full-time job during the week. Evenings and weekends are when I am able to dedicate more time to my business and family. If I am sick or tired, I still have to show up for events that I have signed up to vend at. I have to be consistent, and sometimes that is not easy. Pushing yourself every day to meet your goals is hard but necessary to be successful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your homework! Read about the items that you want to sell. Check out other businesses and see how items are priced, what items are popular, ..etc. This is not meant to steal someone's ideas or business but to guide you.
  2. Network, network, and then network some more. Most vendors and small business owners at the events I have attended are friendly and are always willing to give advice and lend a hand. They often share their experiences and will help you find other events, give ideas on how to promote, and can help grow your business.
  3. Be willing to help others as well. It is great getting advice, ideas, and support from other vendors. You should be willing to do the same for others. I try my best to support small businesses at events that are starting out and will buy at least one item from them. I also communicate with several businesses and share opportunities that have been successful for me, and in return, I get new opportunities for me.
