Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Erne, Director of Mambo Productions Latin Dance School, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mambo Productions is a dance school that has been operating since 2003. Teaching Afro-Latin partner dances such as Salsa, Mambo, Bachata, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, etc. to mostly adults (ages 16 to "sky's the limit"). We teach weekly group classes and private lessons and offer student performance teams.

Tell us about yourself

I was brought on board at the school's beginning by my best friend originally as a teaching assistant, then became the lead male instructor, and eventually ended up running the whole thing. Mostly the dancing itself and the passion for dance motivates me. I want everyone to dance!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Probably having the school last for so long and also being a key player in building the Latin dance scene and community in Calgary, which is sizeable. Along with that, being able to perform at many of the high-profile events we have done both in Calgary and internationally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding time to do everything, especially the admin side of things.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Try to remember what you first loved about what the business is involved in, and hold on to it.
  2. Build relationships within your industry.
  3. Get a good marketing person because you won't have time to do it yourself.
