Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steven Milijasevic, Founder and President of Malo Solutions Inc., located in Breslau, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Management consulting, and I really service all businesses. My focus since starting out has been SMEs, as I have been supporting a govt program called the Canadian Digital Adoption Plan, which specifically applies to companies of this size. The industries these companies reside in are all over the place.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a mechanical engineer by trade with an MBA that has worked in Engineering and Manufacturing for nearly 25 years. For the past decade, I have been running large manufacturing facilities, and the most gratifying aspects of the jobs occurred in the first 6-12months.

During this period of time, I have been able to identify where the biggest opportunities for improvement exist, set strategies to bridge the performance gaps (employee, financial, customer), and then start seeing the improvements take hold. Further, having worked for large corporations my entire career, I was motivated to experience running my own business and having full control over my destiny while having more flexibility in my life with respect to my career.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My tenure as a business owner has been very brief, so I'd say that actually acquiring a pipeline of clients in a short period of time has been a success and something I feel proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

With my company being a recent start-up, there has been no shortage of things that need to get done. Making sure that I prioritize my time effectively is critical and not easy to do sometimes. For example, at this stage of the game, building revenue has to be the most important thing to focus on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't shortchange your own capabilities - if you want it, you can do it.
  2. Stay focused - it's easy to get distracted; staying focused and disciplined is essential.
  3. Keep driving revenue - if you can keep the revenue rolling in, the rest is relatively easy.
