Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Malcolm Struthers, a Clinical Hypnotherapist who runs Malcolm Struthers Hypnotherapy in Scotland.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run Malcolm Struthers Hypnotherapy, working online and in-person with clients to make positive changes and achieve their goals using hypnotherapy. I work with clients on a range of challenges and issues, from stopping smoking and losing weight to boosting motivation and increasing confidence. Many clients want to overcome fears or have a greater sense of clarity. They may want to stop bad habits or start good ones. It all comes down to making positive changes and better decisions. Hypnotherapy is a great way to help them achieve that quickly and is a powerful, positive, and pleasant experience.
Tell us about yourself
I had a successful career in PR and communications and have worked with many public and private sector organizations. During that time, I benefited from hypnotherapy myself for a health condition and became fascinated by the process and how powerful and positive a technique can be. I decided to learn more about the approach and trained as a hypnotherapist more out of interest than any career aspirations. However, I loved it so much that I decided to make the leap, leave my job, and set up in practice, all during the pandemic. It was quite a daunting change but one I have never regretted.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment is always when a client achieves what they want from the sessions we have together. Whether stopping smoking, sleeping better, being more motivated, etc., hearing back from the client that they gained what they wanted and the positive impact our sessions had is my greatest accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It takes time to build a business. It is easy to start off with lots of energy, but maintaining motivation and momentum can be very challenging. The first few years are an uphill struggle to build your brand and reputation.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Firstly, it is important to be truly passionate about what you do as it is more than a job, and it does take over your life when starting out! Secondly, be patient, as it does take time to grow a business, and it is rare for success to come overnight. Thirdly, give yourself a break... literally! It is very easy to forget to have a proper rest and take some time off. When you do, you will be refreshed and reinvigorated.
