What's your business, and who are your customers?
We have a company called Mahina Beaute. It is a frequency beauty company that associates energy healing and organic skincare by revitalizing the energetic frequency field and cellular rejuvenation for a brilliant complexion. We are an entirely plant-based and sustainable skincare company.
Tell us about yourself
We both started as plant-based food bloggers with a deep passion for beauty and alternative medicine. At that time, there weren't many luxurious vegan skincare brands. We dabbled here and there, creating some products for ourselves.
When we decided that this was something we wanted to pursue, we went back to school to become certified skincare formulators. We are both motivated by two things: creating beautiful products and giving back to the community.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our first order was our most significant accomplishment as a business owner. It proved to us that we have a place in the beauty industry. Also, having regular customers who have been with us from day one.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balancing work and personal life were challenging for both of us, especially in the beginning. It's a good thing that we both have very supportive partners. Learning to prioritize our time and create boundaries was challenging, but it was a game changer for us.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- As small business owners, we had to wear many hats, especially in the beginning, when we didn't have the budget to hire help. So we took classes and did everything ourselves, from SEO to social media, blogs, newsletters, photography, and graphics. It was great as it showed how strong we were, but eventually, we had a lot of anxiety and stress due to all the pressure building. Suppose you can learn to delegate. Ask for help from friends, family, or your partner. It's hard for women, as we're expected to do and be everything. It is ok to ask for help and create "Me-Time" for ourselves.
- Make sure that you genuinely love what you do. If you love what you do, all those hours you spend on your business won't feel like work.
- Be resilient. We did our soft launch a few months before the pandemic started. It took a lot of work to navigate sales then; instead of pushing through, we pivoted and used that time to reformulate our products, rebrand ourselves with new logos and bottles, and update our trademark. Looking back, we both felt blessed to have been given that time to redo things without the time pressure.
