Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in branding and marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adrienne Dorsey, Founder of Magnolia Public Relations, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Magnolia Public Relations is a boutique PR agency representing brands in the fashion, family, & lifestyle categories. Our clients are both new and established brands seeking public relations services to boost brand awareness. We also represent individuals who are experts in their respective fields, including style and parenting experts.

Tell us about yourself

I first learned about public relations as a career path when I started interning at a boutique fashion PR agency in Hollywood during graduate school. Soon after graduating, I decided to start my own boutique PR agency focused on providing personalized, high-level results for newly emerging brands and individuals. I'm motivated every day by meeting creative visionaries who are also good people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying power. Since launching in 2006, we've weathered many challenges, from a recession to a pandemic. Having my own business allows me to be flexible and course correct as needed. Many businesses lose steam after a couple of years, so I'm proud to still be thriving and staying true to my business values.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time wasters. It's always frustrating when people don't respect your time, whether it's requesting a lengthy Zoom meeting when they aren't actually serious about working together but want free advice or people who request a proposal then ignore your emails. Vetting potential new business is key, so you can spend your valuable time on paying clients and serious prospects.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Become the go-to in your industry by being responsive and reliable.
  2. Say yes to a new business that will grow your skillset.
  3. Make connections: get involved with collaborative networking groups and attend in-person events in your field.
