Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chelsea Plummer, Founder of Mae's Menu, LLC, located in Fort Collins, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Mae's Menu (maesmenu.com) -- it is a food blog sharing healthy and quick recipes for runners and other active people. My customers are readers who live active lifestyles and want to fuel themselves well for life! In early 2022 I started up the second wing of my business which involves Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Coaching and Freelance work for other food bloggers, as SEO is the way I have primarily grown my business.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved food and cooking -- in fact, I started regularly cooking dinner for my family at age 13! In 2017, I got a job working at a digital marketing firm and learned how to grow a blog. By early 2019, I left that job to start Mae's Menu. My desire to constantly learn more and grow my business by better serving my readers motivates me every day! For my SEO business, I am driven by my desire to help my clients build their businesses, become profitable, and reach their business goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is to run and manage a successful and profitable food blog and SEO business. For many of us, it takes a bit to reach this level, but I am proud that I had the tenacity, vision, discipline, and drive to keep going when the going was tough.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The uncertainty. When you are running your own business, you never know what tomorrow is going to hold. It could, in theory, all come crashing down at any point. BUT-- a positive mindset and belief in my business and mission keeps me going and believing that good things are coming.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be disciplined, positive, and strategic.

  • Disciplined: stay true to your goals and what you set out to achieve by working on them regularly. Don't make excuses or procrastinate. Just do it.
  • Positive: believe that you can succeed. When negative thoughts creep in, replace them with positive ones. Surround yourself with people who believe you can succeed and are succeeding themselves.
  • Strategic: it's not just about the hustle, but being strategic about the work you do. Focus on the work that brings the biggest results and then move forward from there.
