Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marsha Coletrane, Founder of Made-Up By Marsha Deasha, located in Smithfield, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Raleigh, NC, Licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist. My customers are those who desire a personalized beauty experience, whether it be my signature makeup, virtual skincare, makeup consultations, or personal shopping.

Tell us about yourself

I have always had a passion for fashion and beauty. Since I was in elementary school, I have done my own manicures, and I loved exploring the beauty aisle even though I was not old enough to wear makeup. People loved how I presented myself and wanted me to actually do their makeup. This would happen on several occasions, so I decided to become a makeup artist and then later get my esthetician's license. I am also a wife and mother of two beautiful daughters, and my business allows me to work on my terms to help support my family.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is just the fact that I started. I bet on myself and was not afraid to make mistakes because, as a business owner, you are definitely going to make them. I follow a You-print and not someone else's blueprint. I love learning the rules and then breaking them. Why be like someone else when your best asset is just being you?

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being in business is just a hard period, especially if you are a solopreneur. That is why you have to be passionate about the services or products you offer. That passion is what will pull you through hard times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you have a talent that can make you money, do it! Patience is an action. You are not going to achieve everything you want right away. Be decisive and not be afraid to make mistakes. Every mistake is a lesson, so get over it and move on or pivot if you need to. Don't quit; you have to be in it to win it!
