Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Thompson, founder of Mad Laboratory Distilling, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My Business is Mad Laboratory Distilling. We are one of the smallest producers in BC, yet we have managed to produce a ton of award-winning premium spirits made from BC-grown malted barley. Our customers are people who appreciate a smooth and flavourful spirit, all while supporting local small businesses.

Tell us about yourself

I spent my whole adult life so far working in the liquor industry, mostly on the service side, and always had a passion for learning about the products I was serving, including the subtle nuances, especially with spirits. I took a keen interest in spirit production at an early stage in my career. While working in hospitality management, I decided it was time to try and make a go at it myself. I love the ability to create delicious spirits, and the amazing feedback I get along the way keeps me going. There is nothing better than someone trying something of mine for the first time and being completely blown away with how good it is.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been able to produce my own single malt whisky. With such a long waiting period for maturation, it is a tough waiting game, but now that we have started to see the fruits of our labor and patience, it is a wonderful thing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner for me is that everything ultimately falls on my shoulders. If we have a tough month, there is no one to blame but myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Plan ahead as far as you can, and prepare for as many worst-case scenarios that you can think of. Be prepared for anything.
