Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Petr Stepanek, Co-Founder of Macromo, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Macromo provides practical health advice by analyzing wearable data with genomics and lab testing. We target the users of wearables and biohackers. Our mobile app solves the problem of widespread unawareness about common health risks. It makes the experience of everyday health tracking actionable and valuable.

Users can import a wide range of their existing data to get personalized lifestyle advice and recurrent at-home tests with a subscription that provides tangible benefits.

Tell us about yourself

I got the idea to start Macromo when I got my whole genome sequenced in 2021. As a bioinformatician, by analyzing the genetic data, I realized how much of its potential is still out of our reach, especially if we never pair it with any other factors that affect our lives.

There isn't any disease or condition that doesn't have a cause. If there isn't any cause, it only means it isn't yet known. Our health and diagnostics shouldn't be a mystery. We have the tools necessary to make the change. Let's do it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It was only possible to build Macromo with the strong team of co-founders that I'm proud of. Together, we were able to create a group of people who work day and night to make our vision a reality. We've launched our mobile app and sales of genetic tests in Europe less than a year after founding the company.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The healthcare sector, especially, comes with a lot of liabilities. In Macromo, we have to make sure that our recommendations are accurate, and that's why we're one of the few companies that offer at-home testing whose product is a certified medical device in Europe under the MDR regulations.

We had to assemble a team of doctors, geneticists, and bioinformaticians to fulfill our mission to help people make the best decisions for their lifestyle and prevent diseases with a data-driven approach.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The first is to start the business with co-founders you trust and know well. Many startups fail because of defunct relationships or significant differences in the decision-making of founders.
  2. The second is not to be afraid of failing and having to pivot. Rarely you'll be able to strike the perfect idea right from the beginning. There will be a need to adapt and overcome challenges from the market and competitors.
  3. The third is to be bold and think big. I believe there is some truth to the famous quote by Steve Jobs: "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do."
