Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and supplements but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Spencer Miller, Owner of Macro1 Nutrition, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Macro1 Nutrition is a premium supplement company focused on transparency, honesty, and science-backed formulas. Our #1 product is ONE Protein, a whey + casein blend protein that we formulated for baking and cooking. It is the best tasting, baking, and cooking protein on the market.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up with a fascination for healthy eating as I wanted to lose weight when I was in middle school. I took up healthy eating and the whole "if it fits your macros" mentality of you can eat anything, as long as you make it fit within your goals. This led me to really want to start experimenting with cooking with protein powder, especially in the form of desserts. I am a sucker for anything sweet, so this seemed like the best path to "have my cake and eat it too." This led me to being sort of a "protein recipe consultant" for numerous supplement companies, making recipes using their products for them to use on their social media channels. Over time, I found that none of the products I was using really had the baking and cooking ability I was looking for, so I set out to create my own product. After lots of time experimenting, I came up with my formula, found a manufacturer, sampled flavors, and officially launched Macro1 Nutrition with our product, ONE Protein, in January 2021.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment is learning how to deal with failures, hardships, and changes and adapt to overcome them. The supplement industry is an extremely saturated industry, with so many companies out there purely after profit and not dedicated to making a quality product. Additionally, due to the pandemic, costs have skyrocketed, causing me to need to pivot, change pricing, and learn how to be as profitable as possible with the cards that are being dealt. I have truly learned so much about myself and being a business owner, which I would never have been able to learn without this experience.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Certainly, one of the hardest things is making my own destiny, setting my own goals, and relying on my motivation to grow the company and drive new sales, and development of new products. There isn't anyone telling me what I need to get done, so it takes a lot of discipline to take my time and use it where it can be of the most benefit to the company.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would say the first tip is to just commit to it and do it. A great idea that you never actually start is exactly that, an idea. A mediocre idea implemented and run will take you so much farther than the perfect idea that you never even begin. The biggest thing is to just get started.

Second, I would say not to let your happiness ride the wave of sales. This is something that I have struggled with, letting myself be really happy on days where sales are booming and then going the complete opposite direction on days sales are low.

Finally, I would say, surround yourself with people with similar goals and who support you. My friends and family have been extremely supportive of the business and helped me grow through that support.
