Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lydia DiMarzio, Co-Founder of Lydia Jayne Art, located in Aberdeen, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lydia Jayne Art serves anyone looking for watercolor illustrations and paintings as well as digital art for both custom and company licensing work. I also do murals as well as custom work of a wide variety, like acrylic and oil paintings, custom stationery, set design, and more!

Tell us about yourself

To cut a long story short, I fell in love with art since I could first hold a pencil. It took me a long time to realize it was worth pursuing! I was working as a nurse, getting my doctorate to become a nurse practitioner, when I realized I wasn't doing what I loved every day. I was burning myself working as a nurse during the pandemic when my amazing husband encouraged me to start an art business since it was my first passion. As a Christian, I have strong faith that this is what I was meant to be doing. That could mean I combine it with my healthcare background into art therapy or my writing background to write books or both; I don't know yet. Only the sky is the limit!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One is too challenging to choose! I found an amazing long-term client relationship with whom I serve as the art director as needed, and I adore it. Second, to that, I landed two large murals my first year in business- and I'd never done anything that large before!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

All the paperwork!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to ask questions! It's better to look stupid than be stupid!
  2. Take the time to do it right the first time. Patience pays off.
  3. Be kind to yourself. If it were easy to do this, there would be more successful small businesses!
