Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Taylor Hedley, Owner of Luxe Beauty Lab, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Luxe Beauty Lab is a full-service salon specializing in weddings & events that offers hair, lash, and brow services. Our main clientele is adult women; however, we do still offer men's barbering and kids' cuts as well.

Tell us about yourself

The lack of respect and the overall environment from previous employers in the industry is what motivated Kayla (sister & business partner) and me to open up our own salon. We wanted to create a healthy workplace for not only ourselves but our employees as well.

That really is what motivates us to this day, making sure our employees are happy and thriving. When you create a solid environment that your employees are comfortable in, you’ll always get more effort and better quality work from them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment would, without a doubt, be surviving a pandemic. The salon was shut down due to Covid-19 for a total of 9 months. Things were tight. We were always on edge. Clients were scared to be doing anything out of their essential needs. Each lockdown came with losing more and more clientele, and at some points, we weren’t sure what our future held.

Luckily we quickly updated our website to be able to sell hair products online and even started a second hair accessory business called Scrunch, which is the reason we’re really still standing. That’s one thing about entrepreneurs, though, we’re resilient.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It would probably be learning to dabble in every aspect of your business. For example, building a website, learning how to market your business, managing people, accounting, the list goes on of all the roles you quickly have to learn and step into.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are in an industry or niche that you truly love or are passionate about.
  2. You will never be 100% ready to start your business, so stop waiting for that time. Just take the jump.
  3. Keep your work life and your personal life separate. Create boundaries for yourself early on to prevent burnout.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a business owner or entrepreneur is one of the most difficult yet rewarding jobs out there. As long as you can keep up with change and push yourself to grow, you will do great.
