What's your business, and who are your customers?
Hi! I am Christina, and I make cold-process soap, bath and body treats, and skincare products. I am the owner of Luna & The Leaf LLC in Kyle, Texas, and my customers are both local and all over the US. My focus is clean and luxurious skincare that is both healing for the skin and soul and totally affordable! I use organic coconut cream and mulberry silk in all of my soap bars. I also offer a line of soaps and skincare that contains only 100% natural ingredients and fragrances as well as organic additives like fruits and vegetables and local honey! I love giving samples of my products in my customer's packages and at my live markets, especially to people who have skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Tell us about yourself
It was about mid-2019 when I started seriously thinking about entrepreneurship. I was a stay-at-home mom and felt like I could be doing so much more with my time! I started looking into how to start a business from home and looking into different options like drop shipping and women's apparel. Then the pandemic happened, and it all became so much more real and urgent for me to do something. One day while researching on YouTube, I came across a soapmaking video by Royalty Soaps. After watching that video, I was hooked. I had no idea you could make your own soap bars at home and that they could be so cute! I knew I had to try it, so in March of 2020, I purchased all of the basic items I would need to make my first soap, and I got started! I knew then that I wanted to make soap, and I wanted to turn it into a business. I spent the next year perfecting my recipe and learning how to add additives like organic coconut milk and mulberry silk. I learned how to make lip balms and body butter and perfected those recipes as well. I used this time to research what I would need to start a business selling soaps in my state.
In January 2021, I started my soap business! I absolutely love what I do, especially because I am able to help people with skin issues like eczema and psoriasis find relief from their symptoms. Every day I am motivated by my customers, a lot of whom have been shopping with me from the beginning of my business journey. I am also motivated by my goals, one of which is to one day be able to help other minority women realize their dreams of entrepreneurship!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been teaching myself how to sustainably run a business. I would never have thought that I could do what I do now if you had asked me just a few years ago. Every day I am learning and growing and getting closer and closer to my long-term goals.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is time management. Often times there are not enough hours in a day, and like other business owners, I am often kept awake with all my thoughts and ideas.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The most important part of starting a business is learning what is required to do so. I highly recommend signing up for classes, or if you can afford it, hire a business coach. Spend more time and money on this area! You can sell anything, but not everyone can turn that into a successful business. There is so much more involved than you think!

If you are thinking of starting a business, you can do it! Don't be afraid to ask questions and take risks! And do tons and tons of research. You will be doing this for the rest of your business journey anyway!
