Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lauren Arbuckle, owner of Lox, located in Dartmouth, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lox is a sustainable luxury wellness salon in the heart of downtown Dartmouth. Our clients mostly want a hair experience that will help them thrive in their lifestyle.

Tell us about yourself

From the time I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I wanted to be a hairdresser. Hairstylists are in my family; having an uncle who's 70 and is still styling! And an aunt who was my very first stylist, I knew I was destined to become one. The feeling you get when you can make others feel their very best is like no other. I also get to make brides feel the greatest on one of the most special days of their lives. I thrive off creating an incredible experience for everyone, including the stylists that I now have working at Lox.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've had an amazing career where I've specialized in hair and makeup and throughout my 20 years behind the chair. I've had the privilege of being mentored by salon leaders, which inspired me to want to do the same for this industry's youth. I am so excited to create and cultivate an environment designed for sustained growth for hairstylists to thrive. I believe that you have to give back to the communities you serve. I believe in using my business as a force for good; therefore, I'm excited to be a part of a growing community in downtown Dartmouth.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

This expectation I put on myself to be everything to everyone, realizing that I need to make sure that I am living a lifestyle of abundance is the best way for me to serve my team and my community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Put yourself on your calendar first; you can fill from an empty cup.
  2. Be of service. In everything you do, approach it through a servant's heart. Be of service to your team, your community, and most importantly yourself.
  3. Passion. You must have passion for the business you are in. It's difficult to experience joy as a business owner if you don't have passion for the impact you are making.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Our team is growing, and we are committed to providing opportunities for stylists of all levels to thrive in every aspect of their careers.
