#1 in Houston for Wedding Dance - Love Dance HTX

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Joubert, Owner of Love Dance HTX, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Love Dance HTX is a couple BYOB studio! Our studio is award-winning for wedding dance lessons-most; most for the couples we work with who are preparing for their wedding.

Tell us about yourself

I am a ballroom and Latin national dance champion and trained amateurs on how to compete in the dance sport. I noticed that most couples I worked with came in for a dance lesson when they became empty nesters to improve their marriage and learn something new together. They told me they don't dance together except at their wedding ("which was horrible and awkward") and then one other time (friend's wedding or party), and then one spouse laughed at the other, and they NEVER danced together again. It bothered me that for 20 or 30 years, these couples missed out on creating romantic and intimate experiences that would improve the quality of their marriage. In 2016 the idea was born to focus on getting couples to enjoy their dance experience BEFORE they get married. I didn't want to create cheesy and stiff routines for them but wanted to give them tools on how to move and have fun in each other's arms. Now their song gives them positive feelings, and they dance with each other when they are out or in the kitchen! I love that my coaching helps them with their relationship, not just dance at their wedding.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Since we opened, we have been the yearly Best of Weddings on The Knot and now Hall of Famers! We have 46 five-star Google reviews! Most of our clients tell us the dance was their favorite part of wedding planning and the top 3 moments at their wedding!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In the beginning, ask and hire help. I thought that I could do everything myself and no one would be able to teach the same way I do and have the same vision and goals. This created some burnout, and I tore my hip! I viewed the business as "my baby." I now have an amazing team and couldn't work with so many great couples without them!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do you already have a side hustle or business that is producing revenue? I don't suggest starting from zero and taking on a retail space or quitting your day job.
  2. Get great photos and SEO in the beginning! You will be able to use these photos for months/years that help clients see what you are offering.
  3. Look at the numbers. Can you float your expenses for six months (don't forget payroll!) if revenue doesn't start coming in right away? It's better to start small than to be stressed out about overhead. The most important piece is you HAVE to want to run a business. If you want to just collect passive income, this probably isn't for you. Really look at your why.
