What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Lotus Candle Company LLC (Lotus Candles) is a Black-owned and operated family business located in Cleveland, OH. We're passionate about what we do, creating wonderfully hand-made candle products for candle lovers! We are focused on our commitment to our customers, community, and brand.

Our store is located in a diverse and eclectic area of Cleveland, OH, and because of this, our fabulous customers range from the early 20s to well seasoned. They cross all income and educational levels, as well as ethnic backgrounds.

Tell us about yourself

We began our business because of our love of candles. Growing up, my mom always had various types of candles in the house. Sometimes she would light candles during special holiday meals or burn candles to relax while reading her book. She passed the love of candles to me and passed it along to my two children.

In 2017 we decided to create a candle business from our passion. In March 2018, with a lot of research and support from friends and family, we were confident and ready to launch our e-commerce website. Our motivation is our customers. We're dedicated to making quality candles and ensuring that each candle passes our quality standards checklist. We take a lot of time making candles, and in the end, if we wouldn't buy a candle, we won't sell it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment thus far was opening our first brick-and-mortar. Once we signed on the dotted line, it was a true fulfillment for us. It was always our desire to one day have an actual store. In 2021, it was our time, and we're so glad we pulled the trigger.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For us, it would be time! There are times it's not enough hours in the day. Many nights after arriving home for the evening, I would pull out my laptop and work. However, over the past six months, I have improved in time management. I make sure to create and prioritize a list of "To Do's." That has been very beneficial, and I'm much more organized. Now, I feel less overwhelmed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be realistic, understand the business environment, and ensure you know the laws, rules, and regulations governing your business.
  2. Always be open to constructive criticism. Learn from those who have gone before you and are willing to mentor and listen to your customers.
  3. To run and grow your business, continue to follow steps 1 and 2! Be open. Learn from your mistakes. Never give up. Continue to expand your knowledge of the various aspects of business: marketing, sales, advertisement, customer service, and product development. Most of all, don't lose your passion and drive!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a small business owner is rewarding, gratifying, and hard work. But it's your baby to nourish, love, and grow.
