Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lori Morrissey, Founder of Lori Lynn's Cookies and Cream, located in Monument, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lori Lynn's Cookies and Cream connects people, cookies, and ice cream by offering made-to-order ice cream sandwiches from our dessert truck! We enjoy serving at birthday parties, weddings, corporate events, and neighborhood block parties!

Tell us about yourself

I opened Lori Lynn's Cookies and Cream after years of dreaming of having my own bakery. I owned and operated a cookie delivery business (True Mountain Bakery) from 2016-2019, which fueled my desire to share my cookies with my community. My grandpa always said I'd be selling my cookies someday. Welp, here we are!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In the first year of my business (2021), I kept my "day job" as an operations manager for a virtual public relations agency while booking events in the evenings and on weekends. This year (2022), I was able to go full-time with Lori Lynn's! A huge accomplishment!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the many challenges of owning my own business is the lack of boundaries with my time and resources. If I'm not intentional, I find that there is never a time I'm not working. Finding time to rest and renew is vital.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with consultants and mentors that have been successful in your industry.
  2. Find a business offering a similar product or service in another state and ask them questions! Small business owners love to help other small business owners succeed!
  3. Build your business with the end in mind. Do you want to be the only person that ever works for your business, or do you want to have employees? The answer to that will help you set up your processes and systems for future success!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Take the time before you start your business to map out a solid business plan. The time you invest in planning your business now will have abundant returns if done well! Your plans you make will definitely shift and change, but having an anchor point of an initial, solid business plan will be key.
