Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Loreto Remsing, owner of L'Aromatica Perfume, located in Novato, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a small artisan perfume company called L'Aromatica Perfume, based in Northern California. I make small-batch, mixed-media, and all-natural perfumes using exquisite botanical ingredients. Each fragrance is inspired by my life experiences, people I love, or favorite childhood memories. I also create custom perfumes. My customers are people who love unique botanical fragrances or are seeking something unique to them.

Tell us about yourself

I've been enamored by fragrance, scent, and flowers since childhood. When I was in college, I chose graphic design as my career path because I wanted to do something artistic, but as I got older, there was a side of me that craved science and botany. Perfume is the perfect marriage of art and science. There's also something intriguing and rousing about sitting in front of a perfume organ and knowing that the possibilities are endless.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is keeping this little business afloat, growing it slowly, and still showing up inspired every day. It's easy to get bored with careers and hobbies and want to move on to other things, but I don't think I could ever stop being a perfumer.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest parts of being a business owner is staying on top of all of the paperwork, legal documents, records, books, etc. It's great when you can get to the point of hiring those things out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Save up some money and launch your business on your own, without loans or debts. Start small and invest your profits back into the company to grow it. Starting a business is always risky, but not having large debts gives you more freedom.
  2. Pay extra attention to your brand messaging. Keep honing it as you grow your business. Your focus should be clear.
  3. Make sure you give yourself a schedule and stick to it so you can have a good work/life balance. Make sure you always make time to be outside in nature. It will replenish you.
