Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leslie Brugger, Founder of LoLoHealthCo, located in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

LoLoHealthCo is an evidence-based nutrition and wellness resource and coaching platform. I am a registered critical care nurse and studying to be a family nurse practitioner with a background in nutrition science. I am passionate about using current research to translate and clarify common misconceptions about nutrition. I hope to change the way that primary healthcare is delivered, helping my patients focus on nutrition and wellness to treat and prevent chronic disease. Our clients are generally those who are motivated to become the best versions of themselves from the inside out. We provide actionable and approachable information that will help you achieve your health goals. We specialize in optimizing brain health, energy levels, gut health, and hormones.

Tell us about yourself

I started LoLoHealthCo as a frustrated consumer and healthcare professional. The information we get from our primary care providers about nutrition is appalling. Ours provides stuck providing information based on guidelines made 40 years ago. We are perpetuating sick care and financially benefiting from prescribing billions of dollars worth of pharmaceuticals to help mask our symptoms of illness. I want people to feel their best while chasing after their goals, not get bogged down by an endless feeling of fatigue. I plan to overhaul the way that primary care is delivered in Canada. I've started with creating a platform for nutrition education for my community, including 3 eBooks available on our website that speak to some important topics around nutrition and wellness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was actually getting started. There are so many obstacles that can prevent people from starting a business, especially financially. I am really proud that I was motivated to take that leap and come up with a plan to launch my business and sustain my career as a health professional at the same time. I want to bring high-quality health and nutrition information into the healthcare space thus far; healthcare remains focused on acute medicine and treating symptoms. I want to shift that focus from primary care to preventative medicine, which aims to use evidence-based nutrition information to help people remain healthy well into their elder years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Definitely time management. The good news is that tackling big projects is so much easier when you feel good! One of the best parts of living a healthy lifestyle is getting to focus your energy on what is most important to you instead of being consumed by feeling like crap. Whether that's your career goals, your kids, your grandkids, or your hobbies – life is so much better when you are able to fully show up for yourself!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Just start. Start with something simple. A name, an Instagram account. Tiny amounts of effort add up to big results over time. If you haven't read the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, add it to your book list. It's a game-changer.
