Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Moira MacKinnon, the founder of Love & Fantasy Flowers, a local flower farm and design studio, in Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

Love & Fantasy Flowers is a local flower farm and design studio. Our customers join us for a seasonal flower subscription, pick up a bundle of cuts at the 124st farmers market. Like us, our customers love to support sustainably grown, specialty-cut flowers. Once the veil is lifted on the global flower trade, we are happy to offer an alternative!

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

After spending years working in traditional flower shops, I knew I wanted to contribute to the industry in a better way. I am driven to source and grow diverse and unique blooms that keep me and my customers enchanted and enthralled without the same carbon footprint as the global trade. We never use floral foam, a single use plastic, and if you take one thing from this, next time you order an arrangement from a flower shop, request it be made without the use of floral foam, which is polluting our water and environments.

As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?

To date, expanding our farm into “real” farm land from our urban farm was a huge step and accomplishment for the business. This fall, we planted 50 Peony roots and built a small hoop house on our Outpost, also known as, Salem’s Lot.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

The financial pinch that comes with scaling up, and the fact that the seasonal invoices all come at once!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

Find a need, build a niche, tell your story.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Even a nature based business owner/enthusiast needs to get out and enjoy the natural world and thank it regularly. Take only what you need and leave the planet better than you found it.
