Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Taylor Lechner MFN, RD, LD, co-founder of LK Nutrition LLC., located in Dublin, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I co-founded LK Nutrition LLC with my other co-founder, Jessi Kilbarger, MS, RD, LS. We seek to provide evidence-based and inclusive nutrition counseling for individuals with eating disorders/disordered eating. We strive to enhance the lives of our clients by helping them heal their relationships with food, exercise, and their bodies.

Additionally, we seek to train other health care professionals by equipping them with the tools & knowledge to confidently treat clients with disordered eating.

Tell us about yourself

I am pretty lucky because I always knew what I wanted to be when I grew up: a registered dietitian. However, I didn't know I wanted to work in the unique field of eating disorders until later on in school. This was influenced by overcoming my own disordered relationship with food, exercise, and my body.

I never wanted anyone to go through what I did, and this passion continues to fuel me today. In addition to starting LK Nutrition LLC, I am the clinical nutrition manager at The Emily Program in Columbus, Ohio. I have almost six years of experience working with eating disorders at multiple levels of care.

I am also an adjunct professor at Bowling Green State University, where I teach a class about eating disorders to graduate-level nutrition students.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating and teaching my online course, Nutrition Counseling for Adults with Eating Disorders. This course took me about a year to create, and I poured my heart and soul into it. I love providing mentorship and education to help increase awareness and popular bust myths about eating disorders. We need more professionals in the healthcare setting (really any setting) to be able to spot, treat or refer folx with eating disorders. I am overjoyed to help by providing this course as a resource.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Just getting people in the (virtual) door! We know people want and need our services. However, there are real barriers that make it difficult for people to take that leap. This includes lack of finances, time, or just plain fear! Unfortunately, RD's are oftentimes seen as the "bad guys/gals" when it comes to eating disorders and food. I promise, though, that we are not the food police.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are choosing to pursue something you are passionate about! It will make the process a lot easier, even on tougher days.
  2. Create a document where you can get just a brain dump! We use Trello to house all our random ideas and to-do lists. It helps keep us sane!
  3. Be patient. It takes a while to get things moving to actually net a profit, especially if you have a full-time job concurrently.
