What's your business, and who are your customers?

I write and publish original hymns for church congregations to sing. To place these hymns in a meaningful context, I also publish companion devotional materials.

Tell us about yourself

I attended the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and majored in music composition, studying to be a classical composer. But God led me to Lillenas Publishing Company, a church music publisher, where I worked for 34 years, primarily in product development. Through all those years, however, God had his thumb on my back to write hymns. Through all the years when my job and family consumed most of my time and energy, He never let up on that calling. Gradually, He freed up more and more of my time to allow me to write. Twenty-five years ago, God spoke to me and called me to start a small publishing company to publish my own work. I never wanted to be an entrepreneur and felt totally ill-equipped for the task. But He told me, "Do what I tell you to do one day at a time, and leave everything else to Me." All these years, that's all I have done.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Following God one day at a time, I have written, recorded, and published over 800 original hymns, most with companion devotional readings.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, remaining patient with God's timing has been the biggest challenge and richest lesson. He has His own plan and schedule, and He will not be rushed. But I continue to follow Him with the full assurance that He is always faithful and will finish everything He has started.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust God. Knowing and serving Him is life's greatest calling and richest reward.
  2. In my mid-forties, God called me to spend more time praying. I started taking long walks every weekday and made that my prayer time. That has been the most fruitful investment I have ever made.
  3. Became an avid student of the Bible.
