Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lyndsay Scott, founder, and CEO of Kindred Cultures Inc, located in Richmond, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kindred Cultures makes a rainbow of delicious water kefir for everyone in the family! In 2016, I was carting my one-year-old in and out of doctors' offices and hospitals, trying to find a solution for his health. His little face was red and split with eczema, he had a laundry list of food allergies, he always had a cold, and no one knew how to help us. During his health journey, we learned that many of his symptoms could be ameliorated by consuming probiotics, specifically kefir. So, I decided to give it a try at home. After 72 hours of drinking my homemade brew, my son's skin began to heal, and he slept through the night for the first time in over a year. Instantly, I knew we had something special here, and we were so excited to share our delicious water kefir with the world!

Tell us about yourself

I'm Lyndsay Scott, Founder & CEO of Kindred Cultures, mom of 2, wife to an amazing partner, and dog lover. Every day I'm grateful to share our water kefir with the world after seeing such incredible results in my family. It motivates us every day that we have the honour to help people find healthy options to support their bodies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest business accomplishment was listing with Whole Foods 19 months after our humble product launch at a local farmers market. It created instant product validation and opened up retail doors across BC. We are delighted to be launching our products nationally with Whole Foods in March 2022.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When you're building something new and different, you have to pave a new way forward, which can feel daunting and is often a doubt-riddled process. Resilience and Grit are fundamental to keep going through the ups and downs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Entrepreneurship is a journey in self-awareness. Get ready to face all of your personal growth while you're growing your business.
  2. As an aid to the above, get a mentor/ coach/ counselor to create some open space to talk through the difficulties and find solutions that you can live with.
  3. And finally, only pursue a startup dream that you are emotionally and mentally passionate about because it's not about money until it's working, and that takes years and countless hours of hard work with little monetary reward.
