Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry and accessories but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lexey Jackson, Founder of Little Lolita Lexey, located in Middle River, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Little Lolita Lexey. My customers are preteens to grandma.

Tell us about yourself

I found my love for creating jewelry and accessories at the very young age of 9. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and spent much of my time back and forth between doctors, hospitals, and recovering at home. I chose creativity to help manage the pain. I am a self-taught artist. I spent many hours reading and watching YouTube, where I learned many different art processes and techniques. I took all of this information and found ways to incorporate it into my own. Every one of my pieces is one of a kind. I put my heart and soul into crafting. I hope that my pieces are loved.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been blessed to have my work sold in a few stores in Maryland. I think that my biggest accomplishment is that I am also in stores in Virginia and New Jersey, and my newest is in Kansas. At a pet show last week, a customer recognized my name and told me that she had purchased my items in the Virginia store a few times.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Defeat! When things don’t work out as planned. Before COVID, I traveled the country selling at cat conventions. I loved it and was part of a family. COVID really changed my life as I knew it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Patience. Your business won’t grow overnight. It takes time. Real-time. Sometimes years. Don’t give up.
  2. You have to grow a thick skin. Everyone has an opinion, and sometimes they are very hurtful. Don’t let others keep you from working towards your dream.
  3. Your business is a part of you. You need to find ways to advertise every day. Start conversations any chance that you get to talk about your business. Customers are everywhere.
