Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Deanna Clause, Owner of Lit Love Book Box, located in Sechelt, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Lit Love, a book subscription box. Our customers are people who love to read Adult Fiction (all genres) and enjoy receiving snack items, home decor, and self-care products.

Tell us about yourself

I've been part of the Bookstagram community for a while, and it's so nice to be part of a like-minded group. I had spent 15 years working with different marketing agencies when I decided that I wanted to be my own boss! I noticed there was a lack of Adult Fiction book boxes and that I was the right girl for the job. The idea of being able to gift and bring joy to people every month is what got me started and what is still keeping me going today.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making it through my first year and continuing to grow. I launched in March of last year, and there have been a lot of challenges and a huge learning curve. It must seem so simple from the outside, but running a subscription box is actually really complex, and doing it alone is really tough!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats. There is a lot of planning, logistics, and physical work involved in this job, and one of the hardest things for me is accepting things that are out of my control - like shipping companies that are rough with parcels. I put a lot of effort and love into curating items and packaging boxes, so when things arrive damaged because somebody else is careless, it's a bit heartbreaking. Also, for me... TAXES and anything accounting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

In simple terms:

  1. Do your research and create a product that is unique!
  2. Believe in yourself and your product. Put your heart and soul into it. Don't give up.
  3. Be humble. Don't be afraid to learn, consider feedback, and always look for ways to grow and change with trends.
