Build Happiness & Fall in Love With Yourself - Lissen Therapy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kendra Lucas, Founder of Lissen Therapy, located in Jacksonville, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lissen Therapy is a virtual private practice and safe space for women who struggle with anxiety, depression, boundary setting, self-love, dating and relationship issues, and self-esteem. At LT, clients are able to share their stories, feel heard and understood without judgment or shame, and learn evidence-based skills to improve and transform their experiences in life.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a licensed therapist, and I've been in the mental health field for over six years. I began my journey into this field due to witnessing family members suffer from mental health. I felt helpless, and I wanted to help. Seeing this sparked my passion for helping women. Hearing my clients say things along the lines of, "I really needed this," or "This has really helped, and I feel so much better," motivates me each day to show up for women who require my help.

I went to undergrad and gained a degree in Health Education with a minor in Psychology. It wasn't until I experienced the struggles within my own family that I went back to school for a graduate degree in mental health counseling. I knew immediately after completing my internships and supervised direct contact therapy hours that I wanted to go into private practice. I am so glad I did!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is grossing a five-figure month within the first year of opening my private practice full-time. It's a huge milestone for me and a testament that if you work really hard, you get great results.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I love being a business owner and having the flexibility to do what I love-- how I want. One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is that it gets lonely sometimes. I appreciate the fact that I don't have to attend long unnecessary meetings, but sometimes it would be nice to have another person to work with during the week. I try to create opportunities for mingling with others by working at local coffee shops or co-working spaces or eating lunch at a local restaurant.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The first and most simple tip is to just start. Many of us don't get past the idea stage. I get it, it can be scary, but you won't be able to experience any of it until you start.
  2. I would suggest securing an accountability partner. Designate someone who also understands the business side of things and who will be available for you to run things by them or to just simply vent if needed. Family doesn't always get it, and that's fine.
  3. Understand your target audience and tailor directly to them. You don't have to reach everyone at once. Your target is out there. They need you and are waiting for you.
