Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Lisa Barrington, founder of Barrington Coaching & Workplace Strategies, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have guided organizations of all sizes across multiple industries to improve their organizational health. I harness my unique blend of experience and education in both business + psychology to bolster the transformation of senior and executive leaders and teams. Leveraging my expertise in workplace strategy and organizational development, I have partnered with organizations to build cohesive teams, increase leadership effectiveness, deepen employee engagement, and improve business results.

Tell us about yourself

I am Dr. Lisa Barrington, an organizational psychologist, ICF-certified coach, speaker, and university instructor. I hold a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology, where I spent several years researching the elements that create high employee engagement in organizations. I also hold a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Organizational Management. I am a certified coach (PCC) through the International Coach Federation, as well as a Board Certified Coach (BCC). Additionally, I am certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) through the Human Resources Certification Institute and a Senior Certified Professional through the Society for Human Resources (SHRM-SCP). In my practice, I utilize several assessments such as MBTI, EQ-i 2.0, EQ-I 360, DISC, CliftonStrengths, TKI, Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team, VIA Character Strengths, and I am certified in several of these instruments. I am also an appreciative inquiry affiliate.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Clients who change based on our work together. I've had great success with individuals and teams. Several of the teams I've worked with have taken assessments measuring their effectiveness before our work together and then again afterward, showing significant increases!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Marketing the business! I'd rather spend all my time helping clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait. Jump into the water. There's no "perfect" time. Get the basics in place, and then start providing your service.
  2. Help others. If you help others to succeed, it puts that good karma to work for you. Just don't do it expecting something in return. Do it because it feels good to help others and make this world a better place!
  3. Leverage your network. I'm not saying "sell" to your network (I hate the spammy LinkedIn invites as much as you do). Let people know what you do.
