Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in electrical equipment but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shaun Stirland, CMO of LionEnergy LLC., located in American Fork, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lion Energy changes the world by helping individuals, families, and organizations become energy independent. We do this by providing smart lithium energy storage systems – ranging from small hand-held power banks, solar generators, and RV batteries to home and large custom solutions – These smart technology solutions put safe, silent, and renewable power at your fingertips, where you want it when you want it. They are good for people and for our planet.

Tell us about yourself

I started with Lion Energy nearly six years ago. We had two customers with one product for each customer. Today we have dozens of products and hundreds of customers. I think about the people and organizations that we've been able to help, I get chills. We make a difference in people's lives by providing products that help makes lives better, help provides amazing memories, and provide a safe, clean source of energy that can change the world. That's pretty amazing!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

While we provide great products, they are a result of surrounding ourselves with great people. I'm a firm believer that you hire great people, share the vision you have, and then let them make the significant contributions that they are capable of. We make adjustments along the way and celebrate the successes, even the small ones. As a result, the efforts of our employees are off the charts. When we foster, see, and celebrate their successes, our company succeeds.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Like with most business owners, the company can and often does consume every moment of every day and every ounce of energy you are willing to give it. That means sacrifice. Trying to maintain some sense of life balance is probably the most difficult, especially at the beginning of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something you're passionate about, really passionate about, and do that.
  2. Do be afraid to fail. But make sure you learn from it, get back up, and do better. Rise and repeat.
  3. Be fair and generous with your partners and workforce. It doesn't mean letting them take advantage of you but doing a little more for them than they might even deserve.
