Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsey Bourassa, Founder of Lindsey Bourassa Flamenco, located in Topsham, ME, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

An Online Flamenco Dance Studio boasting an extensive library of pre-recorded video lessons covering foundational flamenco dance technique, innovative choreography, and in-depth theory for beginners to advanced-intermediate levels. Lessons provide detailed instruction to help students understand the language of flamenco and to perform movements with confidence and skill. My customers are flamenco dancers and flamenco lovers of all levels who are self-motivated in their learning and dedicated to their craft!

Tell us about yourself

I have been a flamenco dancer since 2004. I train in Sevilla, Spain, with some of the very best flamenco artists in the field. As both a teacher and professional flamenco dancer, I continue to study as vigorously as I teach and perform with globally renowned artists and scholars. I do this because flamenco is a lifelong journey to which I am deeply committed; there is always more to discover and unfold. As I expand my knowledge and skills, I enhance my proficiency as an artist and, in turn, my ability to impart the highest quality instruction to all of my students of all levels.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making a living in the arts is challenging, but with a dedication to excellence, lots of hard work, and tons of courage, I have been able to build a life and a sustainable livelihood from my work as an artist and a teacher. This is a true gift!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard to clock out, so to speak. There is always more to do, and yet rest and downtime are crucial. Finding that balance is so key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know that there will be the parts you love (the advantages) and the parts you don't love (the disadvantages). This is normal!
  2. Try to find your smallest viable audience or customer pool. You don't have to reach the whole world.
  3. Courage! It comes from doing the things that frighten us, often before we are ready. I like to think that courageous baby steps lead the way - and pretty soon, what once we feared, feels like no sweat!
