What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide services to nonprofits in the areas of fundraising, board development, development audits, development plans, strategic planning, and capital campaigns.

Tell us about yourself

I spent 11 years in banking before accepting positions in development, including a university and a museum, before starting my consulting practice in 1993. I have written more than 30 books for nonprofits and offer online courses through my website. I love the nonprofit sector and want to make it even stronger. I especially enjoy teaching and writing because I can reach so many more people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting my ACFRE designation (Advanced Certified Fund Raising Executive) was a huge accomplishment. There are just over 100 ACFREs worldwide. Helping nonprofits raise more than $50,000,000 has been rewarding, as well as publishing more than thirty books. This year I will be 80 years old and have embarked on another dream, completing a master's degree. I am studying at the University of San Diego's Franciscan School of Theology for my Master in Theological Studies.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding the time to work with clients, study, and create a curriculum.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you know that being a business owner, you not only know your subject but know how to run a business, market your business, and finance your business.
  2. Stay on top of industry trends.
  3. Find mentors, collaborators, and partners.
