Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mike Becker, Owner of Lighthouse Therapy Solutions, located in Mount Pleasant, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lighthouse Therapy Solutions is a small mental health private practice. We help individuals and couples in the Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and surrounding areas attain their personal and relational goals, whatever they may be. Our clients are people who are passionate about life and who strive to reach their full potential through self and relational improvement. We work with people who are excited and motivated to attain positive growth and looking for guidance from a professional to help them through the challenges they face along the way.

Tell us about yourself

I am a therapy client just like everybody else who walks through the door at Lighthouse Therapy Solutions. I was a client of therapy long before I had ever become a therapist myself. In fact, this is exactly what motivates me each day to help others at LTS. I understand how important the work we do is to the client's life because, at the end of the day, I am a client myself. I am passionate about therapy because I know how much of an impact it has made on my own life and how it has helped me reach my goals. Knowing that others trust me to help guide them on their own journey and, more importantly, allowing me to be a part of their experience is the best part of my job!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I don't know if I can pick one biggest accomplishment as a business owner, but I can tell you what at the moment feels like a big accomplishment which is the continued growth of the practice. About a year ago, we expanded the practice by moving into a new office, adding an administrative staff member, and adding another therapist. As we grow, we can help more people, and that's our true bottom line.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, there are many challenges, especially as the business expands. In my opinion, the challenges from a business perspective are often a result of some sort of growth. I try to remind myself of this as I am feeling frustrated and uncomfortable during these challenges. The daily tasks of owning a business are going to bring any business owner challenges, but in my opinion, the hardest part about being a business owner is making a choice to believe in yourself enough to take your first steps into becoming a business owner and then being committed along the journey of challenges to figure things out and keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor (or a few).
  2. Learn to find the value in feeling uncomfortable.
  3. Create a vision for a business and lifestyle you are so excited about that it would be a bigger risk and loss to NOT chase it.
