Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in media production but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ethan Hill, Owner of Light Symphony Productions, located in Medford, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Light Symphony Productions giving businesses and organizations a voice through cinematic media.

Tell us about yourself

The entrepreneurial formula, as coined by a friend of mine, says, "Needs plus resources equals solutions." My start in this industry came by filling a need and helping out filming events on the side while I worked a full-time job. It was around then that I realized there was a market for the work I was doing. I just kept following the opportunity and scaled the side hustle to a career.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment in this field would be seeing people touched by the media I produce. You can win your share of film festival awards which feels great too, but seeing someone encouraged, challenged, or tear up watching a short film is what success looks like.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things you must tackle as a business owner, specifically a small or solo business owner, is the fact that you must wear so many hats and fill so many roles within the business. We all get into our business because we are passionate, usually about one or two key areas within our business. But then we realize someone's got to do the marketing, the sales, finances, scheduling, systems & processes, wash the windows, and every other task imaginable.

So on the flip side. As soon as you can, find a way to offload the responsibilities you can to ensure you have time for what makes you come to life and keep yourself from burning out. There are great resources out there, like Zapier, Fiverr, and virtual assistants, that can help streamline your business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Here are a few key points I would share with you if you're looking to start or scale your business:

  1. Start with the entrepreneurial formula: Needs + Resources = Solutions. Find a need people have and create a resource.
  2. Eliminate, delegate, or automate as much as you can.
  3. Be the best. Quality work attracts quality clients. You can scrape the bottom of the barrel, but your clients are harder to work with, and you will have to take on twice as many projects just to keep afloat.
