Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christopher Shea, founder of Lifesjourney Life Coaching, LLC., located in Leonardtown, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Many of us suffer from daily or periodic anxiety, depression, and feelings of being stuck or struggling with life transitions. Life issues such as these don't have a diagnosis or need a counselor. But a coach, a person trained in guiding people through these issues, is the solution. As the founder of Lifesjourney Life Coaching, LLC, I'm a certified life coach as well as a counselor for almost 30 years. I use my clinical skills combined with coaching techniques to guide my clients in finding daily inner peace. Lifesjourney also offers business coaching and conference speakers, both focused on guiding business leaders to daily work in such a way that they inspire themselves and their employees.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a certified counselor and life and business coach who has worked as a clinician and executive for almost 30 years. During that time, I became burnout from my job and needed a change. So I moved to the country and began studying how to find peace. My life experiences, combined with my clinical history, prompted me to found Lifesjourney Life Coaching, LLC as a hub for guiding people to find their own inner peace.

Prior to my time as a counselor, I was a hospital chaplain at a children's hospital and a spiritual retreat leader. I'm a published author who also speaks at seminars and conferences, giving keynote addresses and inspirational talks across the country. Besides my time at Lifesjourney, writing and co-hosting a podcast, I'm an adjunct professor in McDaniel College’s Graduate School for Counseling. I'm inspired every day to continue this work because of those I've been able to help and the reminder it gives me to keep on the path of peace.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The humility I have learned due to the number of individuals and businesses who entrust me with their personal life and their employment. I don't say this lightly, but with great joy and peace as I witness and share in my clients beginning to see, in their own life, the ability to live anxiety-free and at peace.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it's in keeping the focus on the day-to-day administrative tasks. I tend to become focused on my clients, my writing, and my students that I tend to forget or ignore the mundane daily tasks. I coach my business clients to avoid this behavior while it remains a behavior in which I continue to struggle and learn.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. GO FOR IT! Don't let fear or self-doubt get in your way. Do your due diligence in proper market studies and your business plan, but understand and embrace the risk and thrill of starting a business.
  2. Understand the time commitment in starting and running a business. If you are a staff of 1 or 2, the business will consume most of your waking and sleeping hours. Prepare for the workload while also planning for self-care.
  3. Always ask for assistance if you're unsure of something. Most entrepreneurs are willing to help others. Get involved in local business associations and online ones, too. Just because you run a business doesn't mean you know or have to know everything about running a business. Use the wisdom and experience of others to learn the lessons they will teach.
