Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Luis Gonzalez, CEO of Life Power, LLC., located in Merrillville, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a personal training, life coaching, health, and fitness business named Life Power. In a nutshell, Life Power is a successful school that focuses on health and fitness. The difference between us versus other health and fitness platforms is that we emphasize more than just the physical side of training by incorporating the mental, emotional, and oftentimes spiritual sides of a person in order to bring about a holistic form of training.

We don't just sweat and get tired; we get results. Most importantly, we RESTORE POWER to people's lives, hence the name "Life Power."Life is used as an acronym: Living Intentional Fitness every day. I have clients from all walks of life. From mothers who want their bodies back to athletes who want to "live their best life," Everything starts with a mindset. When you can learn how to manage your mindset, the body is easy to train. Life Power is a mindset, not a trainer or a gym. It's a mindset. Anyone can have it, client, or not.

Tell us about yourself

I've been into health and fitness since I was a child. I had trouble with a bully on my way to first or second grade and started exercising as a way to try to be able to defend myself. Also, both of my parents had a host of health issues, and something inside of me told me that I was going to be next if I didn't start doing something about it.

Fast forward, and I became a student of the body as a way to improve in sports and fitness. I've been studying and practicing fitness for over 30 years. Now that I'm aging with young children, my motivation stems from wanting to live a long life full of quality. It's important for me as well to be a "giver." I want to help people, and this is the best way I know how to do that.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We've won some awards for the business of the year in the past, but being able to be a part of so many "success stories" has to be the best accomplishment. Being self-employed as a business owner has also granted me the priceless opportunity to make and create the lifestyle I choose.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Considering the design I created for my business, it's hard to say anything is "hard" because it's all done on my terms with full autonomy. If anything is difficult, it is not being able to be sloppy and lazy while expecting a paycheck, as some people who work for a salary do.

I love my job so much that it doesn't even feel like "work." It's actually a blessing, so I have nothing but full gratitude. Hard is having to be on someone else's payroll with them having more control over me than I have for myself; now that's "hard"!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Give, give, give. The secret is in giving. Make sure you're there to help others in whatever way, shape, or form you are capable.
  2. Besides that, I'd say make sure you follow your heart by doing what you "love" and would do for free. This way, it doesn't feel like work, and also, when you take this approach, you'll be better able to handle the tough times that will inevitably come.
  3. And tip 3? Take good care of your money. Don't blow it. Invest back into the business. When you love something, you take care of it, right? So take care of your people and customers because they will be the ones truly building the business.
