Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Otterbein, owner of Life is Now Therapy, located in Onoway, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is mental health counselling & clinical counselling hypnotherapy. I can use the mind to provide quicker positive outcomes if the client chooses hypnosis. Most clients can see a difference in as little as one session. Some differences are subtle, and some are dramatic. But I cannot do it without the client's help. This is a partnership, I will do my part, and you will need to do yours by being open enough to accept those suggestions I give to you.
Tell us about yourself
I have been in the medical community in various capacities since the mid-1980s. After seeing many patients fall between the cracks in traditional western medicine, I decided I needed to change roles. I found through counseling and hypnotherapy that I could make a difference. And now I see it every day with my clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is becoming recognized in my field for helping my community. I am now getting referrals from medical professionals who normally would not refer their patients to my realm. Also, seeing the differences my work does in my client's life.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
First of all, my clients need to pay out of pocket to see me, whereas other services in the traditional field are covered, and they do not always make a difference. However, I am working hard to change that with many others in my field.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know who your clients are and who you want to serve.
- Do not be afraid to take chances- go out of your comfort zone - this is where growth happens.
- Do not be afraid to say NO. Not everyone is your client.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I am also a school owner and teacher. I am recognized in my field. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it! I love what I do! I am making a difference. Every person is special in my eyes, and I get to see miracles every day, even if they are small ones.
