What's your business, and who are your customers?
My company is a private coaching practice and consulting company called the Life Edit Project, LLC. I offer 1:1 coaching packages to busy, high-achieving professionals—mainly women—who want to create balance at work and at home. I also work with private companies, providing individual coaching and group training to their teams.
Tell us about yourself
When I started coaching in 2018, I never intended my business to be more than a side hustle. I just wanted to share the power of life coaching with other women who looked like they were thriving but felt like they were drowning on the inside.
Then in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic gave me an opportunity to lean into my identity as a professional coach and help more people. My business started growing, and I went full-time in my coaching business in January 2022.
Today I’m obsessed with my business and can’t imagine having any other career! I enjoy coaching my clients, and I like the intellectual exercise of creating new concepts and tools to help my clients get better results faster.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been making enough money in the first year of working my business full time to pay myself and invest in a program to continue growing my skills as a coach and entrepreneur.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest parts about this journey is the unpredictability of it all. Even when you have a solid business model and are experiencing overall success, you can still experience extreme low points and failures. I’ve certainly had to build a higher tolerance for risk and uncertainty because hitting a snag doesn’t always mean that something has gone wrong. The dips are a normal part of the business cycle, but you can’t always see them coming.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start before you think you’re ready. As a recovering perfectionist, I often want to create elaborate plans that account for all the contingencies because that feels safer. But having a perfect plan isn’t a prerequisite to success. There are a lot of mediocre entrepreneurs earning circles around perfectionists that never get their ideas out of their heads and into the market.
- Hire a coach. No matter what industry you’re in, there will be some part of your entrepreneurial journey that will stretch and challenge you. Working with a good coach will accelerate your progress, whether they’re helping you with business strategy, a money mindset, or just processing the messy feelings that come with being a business owner.
- Find a community that can support you. Starting and running a business can become a huge part of your life. But your existing friends and family might not be able to support you or relate to you if they’re not on a similar path. Connect with a community of like-minded people that allows you to feel safe, understood, and encouraged, be it online or in person. It gives you a better chance of success.
