Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Garner, Trainer, Facilitator, and Coach of LG Consultancy, located in St Albans, Hertfordshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a coach, trainer & facilitator in the areas of Management, Leadership, and Team Development, and with a specific passion for Resilience & Wellbeing. My customers are both personal and business, private and public sectors.

Tell us about yourself

I took voluntary redundancy 8 years ago largely due to health issues. During my time ‘out’ I realised I still had a huge passion for coaching and training – but also discovered how important freedom and work-life balance were for me and my health. This led me to start my next chapter as a business owner. I have always loved helping people; contributing towards a person’s happiness, confidence, and sense of purpose in life provides me with great fulfilment.

I am motivated to help people to explore and unravel solutions - stored within themselves - to solve their own problems, tackle challenging situations head-on, and face fears that are holding them back all through a self-compassionate lens.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating and rolling out my own Wellbeing Programme – which has made a difference to 100’s of individuals, teams & organisations’ (virtually & face to face).

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Even though I do have a trusted network I can turn to, ultimately, I work on my own. I have to be my own fan club. Congratulate myself on my successes and hold the mirror up and give myself a pep talk when things are proving more challenging. It has taken me some time to learn how to do both of these skilfully :-)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get yourself a Mentor and Coach – It can be a lonely existence, and sometimes you need a boost of confidence, motivation, or sanity!
  2. Don’t wait for perfection – if you wait until you are 100% sure (this can apply to anything), you will be waiting forever and never move forward.
  3. “Comparison is the thief of joy” – Focus on your own lane. You are unique and bring your own strengths, experience, personality, skill set, and knowledge. As soon as you begin to focus your attention on what others may have that you do not, the Imposter Syndrome can kick in.
