Letting Kids Feel Happy & Healthy - Balance Kids Yoga

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey by launching a yoga business but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Oli Howker, founder of Balance Kids Yoga, based in Brighton and Hove, UK.

Tell us all about your business...

My name is Oli, and I teach yoga to babies, children, teens, and adults as I believe whether you are two or 102-year-olds, yoga can help you explore how it feels to be happy, healthy, and balanced. Balance Kids Yoga, therefore, offers fun, accessible yoga classes to all age groups, teaching tools for life.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

My yoga practice began while I was in my final year of university in 2016 to help me deal with trauma and stress. After graduating with a Psychology degree, I started working as an assistant in several nurseries and primary schools, both mainstream and in a Montessori setting. Over these years, I saw firsthand how school is such a formative time and how we can forget the many stressors children face at this age.

In 2019 I began teaching children’s yoga on the weekends as I wanted the children I worked with to access and experienced the many benefits of mindfulness and yoga in a way that made sense to them.

Since Covid-19, I began teaching so much online that I began to run Balance Kids full time! I now teach in nurseries, schools, studios, and even care homes, and simply giving people the space to be themselves while creating space in their bodies and minds is what motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far is going full-time during the pandemic - taking what was a passion project and turning it into something bigger.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

The hardest part about being a business owner for me is working outside of my set teaching and planning hours and prioritizing my teaching while also having to advertise and create content, etc.

What is the top tip you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

My top tip is to follow your instincts, it doesn't need to be perfect, and you will learn as you go.
